Here's the new project. The future " Trailered Trash " or " Sea-Cup " It's a 1969 Sea Ray SRV160 with a 72 105 hp Chrysler I picked up for 50 bucks. Boat , motor and trailer! I've already had it running and man does it sound healthy! I repaired the power tilt and started on the wiring and seats but the weather hasn't cooperated with me at all! It will need a real good cleaning, which I've started already, another story altogether!, a new steering cable, internal fuel tank ( got a 20 gal one sitting at the shop ) and some paint on the trailer. That is really about it! This one won't break the bank. Yea, right. I'm not putting in carpet or anything. I'm gonna stick with the vinyl flooring that is already in it. This is gonna be the run it into the dock or up on the rocks boat. I don't want another boat where I freak out if someone drags the anchor chain across the paint and shit like that. The 59 for example. I hope to get the controls in it sometime this weekend. After paying rent and utilities for the house and the shop, I don't have two nickles to rub together to make a dime! Great weekend to do stuff that doesn't cost anything! Now that I think of it, I'll see what my friend Art ( Body and paint guy ) is doing this weekend. He owes me a favor or two and I've got plenty of paint left over from the 59 that would work just fine on the trailer. I'll keep ya up to date on the progress and try to post some more pictures.

I've got your number....

I've got your number.... and now I've got mine for the 59! I've been waiting what seems like " FOREVER ! " for my friend Kim to bring my vinyl numbers and letters for the boat. She has arrived! We went over to Rene's place ( where I keep the boat due to space limitations at my house ) and stuck em on the old girl. On the boat, not Rene or Kim! It's fathers day weekend and I guess me and Layton aka " Butt nugget " are gonna take her up to Skagway and see what she'll do! THE BOAT ! NOT RENE OR KIM ! Jesus give me a freaking break! Anyway, all kidding aside, the vinyl letters and numbers look great! I'll post some pictures when we get back Sunday evening. With some luck we may even catch a fish or two! Rene's old man, " Saint Joe" ( the man is a saint), puked the outdrive on his boat so maybe we'll invite him and Greg to come along also. After all, we'll need someone to clean the fish and chip in for gas! Shit, you can't afford to take a boat out nowadays with out securing a loan! Boat stands for " Break- Out- Another- Thousand! Happy fathers day to all you dads and even some of you mothers!

The thrill of victory!

Got her pretty much done. It really needs very little structural work. The smallest amount of glass work aft where the fuel tanks go. We cleaned all the shrubs from the interior, swept it and vacuumed it, then Tad and Greg laid the paint on to all the woodwork to prevent anymore rot. Gregs buddy Larry turned us on to a real good fibreglass restorer that sure made the job of pretty'n her hull up a lot easier. Greg and Tad laid all new carpet and did the glass work that it needed. I rewired the entire boat. added some lights and fixed the wiring on the trailer. You can see the difference in just a weeks time! Tad is gonna buy it from me for what I have in it but me and Greg wanna make sure if we repo it, it'll be up to our standards!

Another classic find!

I've got to learn to say no! Had a customer of mine tell me about a boat out in the woods in Lake George. Well me and Titus took a ride out there in a snow storm to look it over. After hours of searching we finally found it. A diamond in the rough! It's a 1969 Newman. 14'6" with a 135 Merc outboard. Hadn't been run since 1996. Well we haggeled on the price and finally picked it up for $175.00. We towed it back to the Springs and took her to my shop. I had a little 2 stroke mix and figured what the hell, lets see if she'll fire. After about 15 minutes of messing with the fuel lines, primer bulb and hot wiring the ignition, she barked to life. One worry down.

How close can you be?

Greg and I busted some more hump on the boat and pretty much got her done. Can you smell it? I know what is is! It's the light at the end of the tunnel! Neil, Greg and I dove into prepping and painting the boat motor today. Neil busted his hump and got it all sanded while Greg got what little body work was required done. Greg and I painted the top cover pieces this afternoon. We went with the same creme and brown as the boat hull has. While that was drying we cleaned and sanded the lower unit and painted that. I can't assemble it until I hang the motor on the boat. I've got nothing to do and no place to go on Thanksgiving ( other then the Pats game ) so I'll marry the motor and boat then. The only thing left after that is the windshield and wiring. Damn that light is getting brighter! The trim is on. It's on the trailer. The fenders on the trailer are painted and installed. The wheels have been painted and trimmed with baby moons and trim rings. Greg stopped by this morning and helped me with the side moldings and installed the aft cleats and anchor light. All that is left is carpeting, reinstalling all the hardware, front seats and fabricating a rear seat. Greg and I also have to shape some Lexan for the windshield. Expensive hunk of plastic to screw up. Gotta be at our best that day! Of course there's the engine. That has already been degreased and cleaned and just awaits paint. I'll take care of that this week and probably hang it on Friday night. The engine cover does have some road rash I'll have to repair first, but it's not all that bad. Might take a couple hours max to repair. Here are some photo's with out all the hardware or interior work completed.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           Moons and rings
                           Side moldings on
                       Great color combo
                   59 getting close!

Light at the end of the tunnel

The end is near! Me, Greg and James busted hump Friday afternoon to get the boat prepped, inside the shop and off the trailer by five. Couldn't have done it with out Greg and Jame's help. Thanks again guys. Try to run a business and have a project going at the same time! Jake came by at five thirty and painted the rest of the boat. We had a bitch of a time getting the boat to hang properly so he could get it done. Of course being from New England we knew we would figure out something that would work, which we did. Finished painting the bottom at about nine. It took two weeks to complete, but that was because of logistical problems. Jake did a great job of spraying the color, but it sure shows I didn't spend enough time on prep work! Our spray booth was the brain child of Greg. His own copy of the Eisenhower Tunnel! The boats got some spider cracks in the fiberglass showing through ( my fault, bad prep ) so I'll have to sand them out and kiss Jake's butt to have him shoot it again. I'm thinking of changing the name of the boat to " Ship for Brains ". What do you think? Here are some photo's.

Jake ordering four beers
In a cloud
Top color

In the beginning.....

This is how the 59 looked when I got her. She's all stripped, filled and sanded and ready for paint. We found two leaks in her, one on the keel and another on the starboard side of the bottom. ( See Photo's ) After a fair amount of fiberglass I'm pretty sure she'll be dry as a popcorn fart! We want to paint it in a nostalgic style with cream on the bottom, biege on the top and chocolate where it is red right now. Same sceme on the trailer. I picked up the trailer this afternoon from Greg's shop where we've been getting it ready for paint and dragged it to my shop where my buddy Jake got it all painted up nice and pretty. I'll put new carpeting on the boards tomorrow, then I can retrieve the boat from Gregs. We plan to start painting the boat Sunday. We'll paint the wheels and fenders at the same time. It'll be a two or three day process because of drying time. I almost forgot to thank Neil for all his help on this project. Besides helping with this project he's juggling work and school! How in the hell he finds time for Erin I'll never know! This boat is
the same year and model.

Well we finally completed Dock Holiday so I figured I'd need a new project for the Colorado winter. With no significant other anymore I have nothing to do to pass the time so this will be therapy for me. Something to keep my mind occupied and keep me out of trouble! I picked up a 1960 16ft glass magic with the original 75 hp Johnson outboard with trailer. It was loaded with gear such as four fish finders, two out riggers, two down riggers, six five gallon plastic fuel tanks, at least 10 life jackets and ski vests, two anchors, new fenders and brackets for the trailer and too much fishing gear to describe in detail! Man, it looked like a test platform for fishing gear! She also has a 1984 8 hp Johnson kicker motor. It even had a brand new ( never been used ) Cabellas boat cover! The older gent that owned it before was quite the Rube Goldberg. He had an old wiper motor hooked up to a pulley system that turned the 8 hp kicker motor! You should have seen the relay and button set up for this thing. SCARY! Well Greg and I stripped all the electronics and riggers off it today and what a chore! We then filled a plastic trash can with water and tried to fire up the motors. Unbelievably, they both fired right up, even with ten year old fuel! Then the truly amazing part, they both pumped water beautifully! Now the best part. I paid nothing for the boat! Just threw a set of head gaskets on a Chevy pickup. I gave one of the fish finders to Greg for his boat and one I'll put on the rear of Dock Holiday for trolling. I think I'll do the same with the out and down riggers. Put one of each on Dock Holiday, and one of each on Greg's boat. I'm going to pull the kicker motor off it and put it on Dock Holiday. It looks freaking ugly as sin on the glass magic and I'm sure it will push "the Dock " with very little effort. This will be great if Neil, Layton or anybody else wants to use a boat for the weekend or something. They can handle this one a lot easier than Dock Holiday. I'm sure it will haul a skier or tuber no problem. The boys and their friends are more into that then me or my buddies! I really want to restore this boat. It has really pretty lines for a 1960 craft. I especially like the fiberglass frame around the windshield. This thing would look great behind a 1960's classic car. I'll let you know how she does on the water. What do you think of the name " Trailered Trash" ? I will try to add some photo's tomorrow. They won't be of the best quality as someone wanted my camera more than I did. God I hate a thief.

Couple more photos

Let's go! It started out poorly as I stopped at the shop to hook up the hose and check her out. she started right up no problem. Oil pressure good, water temp good, what can go wrong? I found out as soon as I put it in gear and absolutely nothing happened! To make a long story short the neutral safety switch ( which also shifts the out drive ) took a dump. After screwing with it for about two hours I finally jury rigged it so I could shift. About 1:30 in the afternoon I finally get her in the water. It runs good, although not as quick as I had hoped. Just gotta figure out the proper prop and that will be fine. It runs great all day until it's time to put her on the trailer. Damn tilt motor takes a shit. Anyway it's now Thursday and all the above problems have been taken care of. I'm adding a coupe photo's of her maiden cruise at Eleven Mile reservoir. Greg, Tad and Dee busted their chops today to get the engine bolted in, the engine harness's connected and some custom installs of switch plates etc. They also got the flooring glued, screwed and glassed! We had to extend the engine cover by 5 inch's due to the longer V8 and that is close to completed also. I have to tell ya, I am blessed to have good friends like Greg and Tad and everyone else that helped. Greg for sure has a place in heaven waiting on him. It's too bad he won't know anyone there but he makes friends pretty quickly! If it weren't for Greg this project would have taken me a month at least. Thanks to his unbelievable efforts we might just catch some fish after all! Once again thank you so much Greg. Till now. Spontaneous combustion. Ain't that the shits! Poor Greg was working on a rib for the boat when he smelled something. Turning around from his work bench he noticed a fire thru the windshield of the boat. After a second or two he realised the flames were on his side of the glass! He had the good sense to put out the flames by smothering them with a blanket. ( He's my hero ) The fire started in the vinyl bag the fish finder was in which was sitting on the dash by its self with nothing else around it. Now there is no battery in the boat, the fish finder doesn't take batteries, there was no ignition source for the fire, and neither one of us drinks or does drugs ( any more ). What could it be other than spontaneous combustion? I pulled the fish finder apart and repaired it so it works now ( although it ain't pretty anymore! ) but I had to call my buddy Robert Moriarty to make new windows for it. The heat raised a bit of hell with em! I was leaning toward moving up until I found the deal of the century! Picked up a beautiful running 302 Ford marine engine, complete, for five large. That includes the complete lower unit which I've been looking for since last fall! In order to install the V8 we, Me and Greg Titus, but mostly Titus, had to fabricate front motor mount perch's. Well we decided since we were gonna be in there anyway, now was the time to replace the floor decking. When we removed the old flooring we found the centerboard and stringers were pretty well rotted. We have sistered a new centerboard and installed a pair of ribs to stiffen her up a bit. Greg's gonna wrap all that in fiberglass tomorrow then we can put down the new floatation foam and decking. Then we'll fiberglass over the decking, install the new carpet and install our new power. We've also replaced the complete wiring harness and added new gauges and windshield glass. Pretty much she's in better shape now than when she was new!

Optically Delusional, Or Pulling a " scan "

Couple of scan.... Well to humor the two of them I took some photo's with my camera phone. Well was I surprised when I up loaded them to this blog. I noticed something was definitely amiss. I don't know about you, but I've never caught fish with scales that look like bar codes, have you? Look closely and you may be able to see them yourself! UNBELIEVABLE! These two will go to any length to get on this world renowned blog. They must have stopped at Safeway or King Soopers and bought them. I'm sorry they had to lower them selves to such underhanded tactics. I'll tell you, Richard never used to be like this. That damn Les has ruined another perfectly good human being. Dragged him into the gutter. Poor Richard probably never even saw it coming. Hell, Les will have him dumpster diving within a week! Please don't think all of my friends are like this, god no! I try to distance myself and shield my friends from this type of riffraff. It's just unfortunate the few can try to ruin it for the masses. I guess I'll have to be a bit more cautious before I answer the door again with out identifying whom it is!

" That sinking feeling"

Well I said after our shakedown cruise the boat was running well. I was wro.....mistaken. Greg and Loyd said the out drive sounded loud to them, so I figured I'd change the fluids in the upper and lower units. I drained the lower unit, fluid looked fine. I drained the upper unit and came to the conclusion it should be full of fluids other than pure H2O. We pulled the out drive off the boat, pulled it apart and found every bearing and seal toasted. Also found the water pump housing and impeller toasted. I mean put a fork in it, it's done toasted! I called Keith at N.A.P.A and had him scrounge up all the bearings,races and seals I needed then ordered a new pump assy from e-basic power on line.(Great place for replacement marine parts). I got all the bearings and seals replaced that I could. Greg and Loyd came over and gave me a hand removing a bearing race I couldn't get out of the upper case. Loyd had a slide hammer puller that did the trick quite well. The upper unit is all together now. I'm just waiting for the water pump assy to arrive, (Tuesday) so I can join the upper and lower units and reinstall them on the boat.
Gregs luck isn't much better. On the shakedown cruise he said his wasn't running quite right. He went to install a fresh set of plugs in his 200 hp Evinrude and found water in the number 6 cylinder. OUCH! The head gasket was okay but the exhaust air box gasket was leaking. It scored the piston, but we think,(hope)it'll last this season and we'll fix it in the fall. Things could have been worse. I just wish the previous owner would have made an attempt to do regular maintenance so this shit wouldn't have happened. At least now we know everything has been completely gone thru, so we foresee no more problems. Maybe. Please. I hope.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://coloradofishtails.blogspot.com/2009/03/that-sinking-feeling.html' title='" Greg and I got both boats wet today. We ran them down to Pueblo reservoir for their shake down cruises. Our old National ran just fine once I realized the fuel had to be turned on and all the petcocks closed! Greg says he had a hell of a time getting his started and it seemed like it was sucking air but he blew by me like I was tied to the dock! Greg had his buddy Loyd with him and I snagged Harry and my dog Mijah. She whined like hell when she saw Greg but she just wouldn't jump between the two boats. That damn Greg...... he gets all the girls! Well, I guess we just gotta wait for the ice to thaw on the lakes we like to fish. It'll be a couple or three weeks before that happens. Our favorite spots are in the high country and it hasn't been warm enough for long enough up there. Darwin has completed all the wood work and it's all been installed. The new side panels are in, the tires have been pumped up, there's gas in the tank. The Bimini top has been cut down so we don't need clearance from air traffic control. We've even picked a name for her, " Dock Holiday ". Pretty much ready to go except for installing one interior light and laying down some carpet, right? WRONG. I had to go and open my mouth saying I wish the stripe on the boat wasn't such a god awful ugly brown. It would have been okay if I hadn't thought out loud and Greg and my buddy Paul weren't standing there. Next thing I know, the three of us and Harry are scraping registration numbers, filling holes and sanding the above mentioned " god awful ugly brown ". We picked a real nice royal blue we found on a NAPA parts box. We did find out the boat was originally registered in Florida and it was the thirty seventh boat ever made by National Boat Corp. ( It might have also been the last!) We even painted the transom and trailer fenders to match! I don't know about the rest of the guys, but I think it looks fantastic! I have to once again thank Greg, Darwin, Paul and Harry for the great help and effort they put forth. I couldn't, ( and wouldn't ), have done it without their help and expertize.

I've been jones'n for fish'n!

New seats and carpet

Home made glove box

Les doin what he does best. If I don't get out on a body of water pretty quick, somebodys gonna get hurt! I've got everything done on the boat other than carpeting the bow, removing those god awful ugly no skid strips, and Darwin is making some really nice bow step plates to match the ones he made for the gunwales. We built side panels, gunwale steps, repaired the windshield, installed a glove box and interior lighting. ( See photos ) I'm running out of stuff to do, and when that happens the ice had better be gone! Every time I'm working on her, I can see my rods and tackle box giving me the evil eye! they want out of the garage too! Les stopped and helped me today, (It's him at the helm ), and brought us a boat ladder. Good. He'll need it if he starts catching more fish than the rest of us and starts to give us shit about it! Of course there could be a mutiny and those s.o.b's could make ME have to us it. Not really, they'd tie the anchor around me AND the ladder and chuck us both overboard!

Congratulations in order!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_XQ5vk9UtRq0/SY-WDdp4FlI/AAAAAAAAABs/k6TRqNEGcRo/s320/dsc00023%5B1%5D.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300620272682407506" />
I am happy to announce the birth of a beautiful baby girl to my daughter Karianne and her husband Terry. After deliberating,( work or ride...work or ride? ) I said what the hell. When we got there we realized we hadn't brought our walking sticks, we had mistakenly grabbed our fishing poles! And instead of my lunch bucket I had grabbed my tackle box! Then, unbelievably, there, in the back of Gregs pickup, magically appeared a bucket of minnows! Imagine our surprise! Okay, the truth. We decided to check out any action on the Arkansas River. It's still really early, but Greg wanted to feel out a couple spots to try and figure out if they were hitting, and on what. We fished for a while just west of downtown, but the river seemed too fast. We then headed west, over by the power plant, to try our luck. After about thirty minutes Greg caught a beauty. A nice brown. Well to me it was a beauty. For Greg it has to be of the size that would make Captain Ahab proud. We then headed to the other side of the river and hit a couple spots we thought were gonna produce. WRONG. We headed a little further west, to another spot that looked promising. I caught my little brown there, but then nothing, nada, zip and zilch. It was getting late so we gave it one more try at a nice spot that had " Fish Me " written all over it. Well the fish me part must have drifted from somewhere up stream because they for sure weren't there! All in all it ended up being an OK day. It was nice to get out by the water with a good friend, and neither one of us got skunked. Spring training has begun.

The " Hole " Story

Well the bull has begun to fly. Les tells us he went ice fishing up at Skaguay last week and caught 6 keepers. That part I can almost believe. What follows is his story with no documentation or proof other than his word. It seems on the last catch of the day the trout wanted his tackle more than he did. Les watched in horror ( I would guess ) as his rod and reel disappeared beneath the ice. Now most of us would say what the hey and buy new equipment. Not tight ass Les, no sirree. He spends the better part of a beautiful afternoon drilling a total of eleven ( that's ten plus another ) new holes trying to recover his Barbie rod and reel. Jesus Les, I'll let you take my Walmart card to buy a new one! Thirty bucks worth of gas and two stroke oil for a eight dollar rod and reel. I guess when you get down to brass tacks it was worth it, for two reasons. First he did retrieve his gear with the trout still attached, and secondly we didn't have to listen to him whine! I'm sure the whine will come into play before too long. " Oh the wind blew in my fishing hut and I got soooooo cold ", or " I had to carry all the fish by myself ". Oh yea, It's just a matter of time.......

Das Boot

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_XQ5vk9UtRq0/SbAddRAXblI/AAAAAAAAADM/hhRS5DK-VjI/s320/pic030509_3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309776349288164946" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_XQ5vk9UtRq0/SbAdY98YjlI/AAAAAAAAADE/eT1d4qMRiLk/s320/pic030509_2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309776275451711058" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_XQ5vk9UtRq0/SbAc23KmidI/AAAAAAAAAC8/hnLY04eKr9M/s320/pic030509_1%5B1%5D.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309775689516747218" />

You probably want to know about the boat and all the other manly things that go with fishing. The boat is a 18 ft National fiberglass tri-hull. She is powered by an old GM 2.5 Iron duke putting 120 hp at the prop. ( Or whats left of it! ). We put a new manifold and freeze plugs in it this fall. ( Note to former owner... WINTERIZE YOUR BOAT YOU FREAKIN IDIOT ! ) Now that I have that off my chest...., replaced all the seats, new carpet, hummingbird fish finder ( The newbies think it's " Neat " ) and pretty much gave her what she needed. We just bought her this fall and have only had it out three times. It sure is more comfortable than the old 14ft aluminum Montgomery-Ward with the 20hp Johnson we used previosly. No, not all five of us at once. First and foremost is me the skipper, ( Well I have the key to the boat ) Kevin. Then we come to my next door neighbor, Darwin, aka " Mr D ", a retired meat cutter and a fine wood worker! To complete our foursome is Greg, aka " Greg " jack of all trades and master of all of them too! The guy never stops amazing me. He could make a coconut out of a TV! And of course to screw up our foursome is my buddy Les. He's smart as a horse and hung like Einstein! He has a job, today, but this could change at any time!
